Before you finish reading this, I want you to run a quick test.
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google. Type the question your best customer would ask. Something like “Who’s the best [what you do] in [your city]?” Then read the answer.
Are you in it?
If you’re not, somebody else is. And that somebody just picked up a customer who never even saw your name.
That’s AEO. Answer Engine Optimization. It’s the biggest shift in how customers find businesses since Google showed up, and most owners I talk to have no idea it’s already costing them.
The rules changed while you were running your business
For twenty years the game was simple. Rank on page one, get the click, win the customer. That game is ending.
Today the answer shows up before the links do. Google writes a summary at the top. ChatGPT gives a recommendation. Perplexity hands over a short list with sources. Your customer gets what they need and never scrolls.
The numbers are hard to ignore. Pew Research found that when Google shows an AI summary, people click a regular result about 8% of the time. Without the summary, it’s 15%. That’s nearly half the clicks, gone. Ahrefs measured it at the top spot specifically and found the #1 ranked page loses about 58% of its clicks when an AI Overview appears.
Read that again. You can be number one and still lose more than half your traffic.
What that looks like in real dollars
Let’s make it simple. This is a hypothetical, but run your own numbers through it.
Say search used to bring you 1,000 visits a month. Three percent become leads. That’s 30 leads. Cut the clicks roughly in half and you’re at 15. If you close one in three and a customer is worth $5,000 to you, that’s five lost customers. $25,000 a month. $300,000 a year.
And here’s the part that keeps me up at night for my clients. Your dashboard won’t tell you. Your rankings look fine. Your impressions might even be up. Traffic just slowly slides, leads get thinner, and nobody in the room can explain why.
The businesses getting named are pulling away
This isn’t only a loss story. Somebody is winning.
Seer Interactive found that brands cited inside Google’s AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that ranked but weren’t cited. Read that last part twice. Getting AEO right doesn’t just help your free traffic. It makes your advertising work harder too.
So right now there are two kinds of businesses in your market. The ones the machine names, and the ones it doesn’t. Your competitor doesn’t need to be better than you. They just need to be the name the AI says out loud.
Why most good businesses are invisible
AI doesn’t pick favorites at random. It looks for agreement. It reads your website, your Google profile, your reviews, what other sites say about you, and it asks one question: do all these sources tell the same clear story?
If your homepage says “innovative solutions,” your Google profile says something else, and nobody online is talking about you, the AI doesn’t know what you are. So it recommends someone it does understand.
That’s why I tell owners AEO is a brand problem before it’s a tech problem. Fuzzy messaging was always expensive. Now it makes you invisible.
Find out where you stand
At Boken, we’re offering a free AEO audit. We’ll show you where you show up in AI answers, where your competitors show up instead, and what it will take to close the gap. Then we’ll sit down and talk about how to strengthen your positioning so you’re the answer, not the alternative.
The businesses that move now get to define their category in AI before everyone else wakes up. The ones that wait will be paying more to fight for what’s left.
Run the test. Then let’s talk.
