Marketplace: Answer Engine Optimization: Why Your Rankings Look Fine and Your Phone Doesn’t Ring

Business owners keep telling me the same thing right now. “Our SEO guy says we’re ranking great. So why is the phone so quiet?”

He wasn’t crazy. His rankings really were fine. The problem is that rankings don’t mean what they used to. That’s where answer engine optimization comes in, and it’s the conversation most business owners haven’t had yet.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of getting your business named inside AI-generated answers. Think Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Instead of showing ten blue links, these tools write an answer. Sometimes they name a business. Sometimes they name three. Everyone else is invisible.

SEO was about getting on the list. AEO is about getting into the answer.

The click is disappearing

Here’s what changed. Pew Research found that when Google shows an AI summary, people click a regular search result about 8% of the time. Without the summary, it’s 15%. Ahrefs found that the number one ranked page loses about 58% of its clicks when an AI Overview shows up above it.

So you can win the ranking and still lose the customer. Your dashboard says you’re number one. Your sales team says leads are thin. Both are right.

Why this hits your bottom line

Run your own math. If search brought you 30 leads a month and clicks drop by half, you’re down 15 leads. Multiply that by your close rate and your average customer value. For most growing companies, that number is real money, every single month, and it’s happening quietly.

The worst part isn’t the loss. It’s that your competitor might be the one getting named. When someone asks an AI tool who to hire, there’s no page two. There’s just the answer.

What answer engines look for

AI tools are trying to give one confident recommendation. To do that, they look for:

  • Clarity. Can it tell in one sentence what you do and who you serve?
  • Consistency. Do your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and reviews tell the same story?
  • Proof. Are real customers and other sites talking about you?
  • Direct answers. Does your content answer the actual questions customers ask?

Notice that most of that list isn’t technical. It’s messaging and positioning. That’s why I tell owners AEO is a brand problem before it’s a tech problem.

How Boken approaches AEO

At Boken, we were working with AI models before AEO had a name. We use AI every day as a tool. But we never skip the human part, because people can feel when a brand is fake. We start with your message, make it clear and consistent everywhere, and then build the content and signals that get you cited.

FAQS

What is answer engine optimization? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the process of making your business clear, trusted, and well-structured online so AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend it in their answers.

Is AEO replacing SEO? No. SEO still matters, but AEO decides whether you get named when AI writes the answer. The two work together.
